PAGASA: 'Dante' makes 6th landfall over Oriental Mindoro; set for 7th landfall in Bataan
Tropical storm "Dante" (international name: "Choi-wan") is now heading towards the southwestern coast of Batangas after making its sixth landfall over Pola, Oriental Mindoro at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 2.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the center of tropical storm Dante was already over the coastal waters of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro at around 4 p.m.
It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph while mowing west-northwestward at 15 kph.
Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 remains hoisted over northern and central portion of Oriental Mindoro, northern and central portion of Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands, Batangas, Cavite, Bataan, southwestern portion of Bulacan, western portion of Pampanga, Zambales, western portion of Tarlac, and western portion of Pangasinan in the 5 p.m. bulletin issued by PAGASA.
Signal No. 1 is still up in the following areas: Marinduque, western portion of Romblon, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, the rest of Occidental Mindoro, western portion of Quezon, Laguna, Metro Manila, Rizal, the rest of Bulacan, the rest of Pampanga, the rest of Tarlac, western portion of Nueva Ecija, the rest of Pangasinan, southern portion of Benguet, La Union, and northwestern portion of Antique.
Winds, rains prevail
Within 24 to 36 hours, Dante is expected to bring strong winds to gale-force winds in areas under Signal No. 2, while strong winds may affect areas under Signal No. 1.
Likewise, in the next few hours, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will still prevail over Cavite, Batangas, Romblon, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro,
Oriental Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales, and Pangasinan.
Dante will also bring moderate to heavy rains over the rest of Central Luzon and Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, Metro Manila, northern portion of Palawan including Calamian, Cuyo, and Cagayancillo Islands, Aklan, and Antique.
Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may be felt in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Abra, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and the rest of Palawan.
"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered to widespread flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are expected, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.
"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall
occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.
Forecast track and intensity
After Dante made its sixth landfall over Pola, Oriental Mindoro, PAGASA said the storm will move north-northwestward or northwestward and may pass near or in the vicinity of the southwestern portion of Batangas before it makes another landfall over Bataan on Wednesday evening.
It will then traverse over Zambales and Pangasinan and will emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Thursday morning, it added.
Based on the track and intensity forecast, Dante will likely be in the vicinity of San Felipe, Zambales at 2 a.m., Thursday, June 3; 135 km west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte at 2 p.m., Thursday; 270 km west of Basco, Batanes at 2 a.m., Friday, June 4, and 140 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes at 2 p.m., Friday.
Due to land interaction with the rugged terrain of mainland Luzon, Dante may weaken into a tropical depression Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, and by Saturday into a low pressure area.
