Dennis Padilla reveals one question he's too shy to ask daughter Julia Barretto

Comedian Dennis Padilla said that he's thankful for the second life God has given him.


"This is my second life. Actually I don't ask anything from God these days because he has given me second life," said Padilla in Filipino during a sit-down interview by his friend veteran entertainment reporter-actor Ogie Diaz on June 1.


Padilla, 59, was referring to his full recovery from COVID-19 in March. That time, he recalled, he drew strength from his conversations with his children who would call him every night.

"I thought I would die. Julia would tell me that her siblings are praying for my recovery," said Padilla.


Despite a complicated relationship with his children and former wife Marjorie Barretto, Dennis said that he has no hatred towards anyone.


Then the interview touched on the issue of changing Julia's surname from Padilla to Barretto.


"Why does she have to change the surname? They said for my children to become legitimate, they need to carry the surname Barretto. If not, they will be illegitimate. But that was a long time ago. That was the issue when my children were still underage. Now that they are adults, they have the freedom to choose their surname," said Padilla.


When asked if Julia has legalized the surname Barretto on documents, Padilla said: "I don't know. I am too shy to ask her."


"I might hear words I don't want to hear," said Padilla in Pilipino.


Asked what is it that he doesn't want to hear, Padilla said: "Ayoko marinig yung sasabihn nila 'sorry pa, pinalitan na namin ng Barretto yung apelyido namin.' " (I don't want to hear from them 'sorry pa, we have changed our surname to Barretto).


Padilla also revealed that he was really down and out when he broke up with Marjorie in 2006.


"I don't have a career then. When I left home, I only have P8,000 cash in the bank. My political career has just ended, and I don't have movie offers and TV guesting," he recalled.


But it's all in the past now as Padilla settled his differences with his wife and children. "I'm better off as a father than being a husband. I've apologized to them, so sorry for all the wrong things I've done."
