Cagayan students appeal for academic ease

Over 400 senior high students from all over Cagayan Valley on Wednesday, June 1, have signed an online petition calling the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement academic ease to lighten the burden both for students and teachers.

On May 31, the Concerned Students of Cagayan Valley for Academic Ease filed a petition to the DepEd Regional Office electronically, citing burnout from "numerous requirements under a self-study mode of learning for the past year."

"By academic ease, we mean that: lessen the requirements; implement no penalty on late submissions; and implement a no-fail policy," the students said.

In a pilot survey among students in Cagayan National High School, 75 percent spend five to six hours answering a module, four hours longer than DepEd's prescribed Weekly Home Learning Plan.

The study also revealed that 8 out of 10 students faced "difficulty in understanding modules" and had "limited time in answering modules."

Meanwhile, 7 out of 10 students expressed "lacked of motivation in answering modules."

"We sign this petition as we share a vision where no student must constantly compromise his/her psycho-social well-being in answering modules imposed by the Department of Education. We stand that interactive face-to-face classes with our teachers and fellow students is the mode of learning we deserve. We all deserve safe, quality, and accessible education," the students pressed.
