Bulacan mayor confirms signature drive for Sara Duterte's presidential bid
Guiguinto, Bulacan Mayor Boy Cruz confirmed Wednesday the presence of a signature campaign in the province that urges presidential daughter Sara Duterte to run for president in the upcoming national elections.
Cruz said the campaign is being led by those who also supported then-mayor and now President Duterte when he ran for the position in the 2016 election.
"These are the same groups na umiikot na nagpapatulong, kasi ang gusto nila ay makumbinsi si Inday Sara na tumakbo. Ang hinihinigi nila... ang pulso ng ating mga kababayan (who ask for assistance because they want Inday Sara to run in the next elections. What they want to know is the pulse of the people)... they're looking for the numbers," Cruz said in DZBB interview.
The mayor said he allowed the campaign as he is also interested in knowing the consensus of his constituents.
This came after the volunteers for the campaign paid him a visit in his office.
"At the end of the day, this is an expression ng mga tao hindi naman po natin pipigilan (of the people which we cannot stop)," he said.
Cruz bared he also signed the campaign as he saw the presidential daughter's "sincerity" as a public servant when he went to Davao City.
Aside from Guiguinto, there are also towns in Bulacan where signature campaigns urging the younger Duterte to run for president are being held, Cruz said.
"Merong ibang punong bayan na nakapag kwento sa kin (There were other municipal mayors who told me about it as well)," he said.
Amid COVID-19 pandemic, Cruz said he can no longer do anything to stop this kind of activity as election season nears.
The mayor said signature campaigns for those under other political parties are also welcome as "that is the very essence of democracy."
