Ateneo asks faculty members to practice 'utmost consideration' during 'Dante' onslaught, power outages

The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) has asked its faculty members to "take into utmost consideration" the situation of students during the onslaught of Tropical storm "Dante" and during the rotational power outages in Luzon.

A memorandum released by the Office of the Vice President for the Loyola Schools on June 1, said faculty members and students working or living in places where tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 or lower is raised are excused from holding or attending synchronous classes.

Submissions of requirements due while a storm signal is raised are also postponed.

"We are currently beset with disruptions: inclement weather in many parts of the country -- brought about by Dante; power outages in the Luzon grid; intermittent or no internet connection on account of one or the other or both. These disruptions affect both students and employees," Vice President Maria Luz C. Vilches said.

Meanwhile, once a storm signal beyond No. 2 has been raised "anywhere in the country" all synchronous classes in the University will be automatically suspended.

Students in areas with storm signals can also ask to be excused from exams and have deadlined extended or rescheduled.

Ateneo likewise reminded faculty members to give NE (no final examination) for those who were unable to take the exam on the scheduled date or INC (incomplete) for those who are unable to complete the submission of requirements.

"I would like to appeal to the good judgment and good nature of both faculty and students in devising contingencies and communicate the same to one another," Vilches added.

On Wednesday, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines placed the Luzon grid under red alert from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Rotational power outages are expected when the grid is under red alert.

In the Philippine, Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) severe weather bulletin issued at 8 a.m., "Dante" has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph while moving west at 25 kph.

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 is still up over the southern portion of Quezon, Batangas, southern portion of Laguna, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, extreme northern portion of Occidental Mindoro, Romblon, and western portion of Masbate including Burias Island, northern portion of Capiz, northern portion of Aklan, and extreme northeastern portion of Iloilo.

Signal No. 1 has been raised over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, western portion of Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, extreme southern portion of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, western portion of Quirino, central and southern portion of Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, the rest of Quezon, the rest of Laguna, Cavite, Occidental Mindoro, Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, the western portion of Camarines Norte, the western portion of Camarines Sur, the western portion of Albay, the rest of Masbate including Ticao Island, the western portion of Sorsogon, Antique, the rest of Aklan, the rest of Capiz, the rest of Iloilo, Guimaras, northern portion of Negros Occidental, extreme northern portion of Negros Oriental, and northwestern portion of Cebu including Bantayan Islands.
