Register to vote, Pangilinan urges youth

Senate Francis Pangilinan on Saturday, June 19, called on the Filipino youth to register and vote in the 2022 elections as he reminded them of the advocacies of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

“Ngayon ay 160 na si Ka Pepe, pero bata pa lang siya, ipinaglaban na niya ang kanyang mga paniniwala -- isang katangian na dala pa rin hanggang ngayon ng kabataang Pilipino (Pepe is now 160 years old, but he fought for his beliefs since he was a child, a trait that Filipino youth still carries up to this day)," Pangilinan said in a statement, citing the youth's contributions to help address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other calamities that hit the country.

"Sa ating kasaysayan, hindi pa tayo binigo ng kabataan. Noon at ngayon, ang kabataan ang mitsa ng pagbabago (Throughout our history, our youth did not disappoint. The youth remains to be our hope for change)," he continued, paying homage to Rizal's famous quote.

With this, the opposition senator underscored the role of Filipino youth in shaping the country, especially in the wake of the global health crisis.

"Kaya hinihimok natin ang ating mga kabataan na dalhin ang kanilang sigla sa pagsisigurong lahat ay rehistrado at lahat boboto (That's why are are urging our youth to bring their vigor in making sure that all will be registered and be able to vote)," Pangilinan said.

"Ito ang magpapasya sa ating mga kinabukasan (This will define our future)," he pointed out.

The Liberal Party (LP) president has been appealing to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ramp up its voter education and registration efforts to encourage more eligible Filipinos to vote in the 2022 elections.

“This is all the more reason we should ramp up our COVID response to test, trace, isolate. And hasten vaccine roll-outs so we can ensure that our citizens is one, safer from the pandemic and two, able to exercise their democratic rights. The 2022 elections, after all, will elect leaders who will see us through post-pandemic recovery,” Pangilinan said last month.
