Dwight Ramos earns praise from former Gilas coach Toroman

Dwight Ramos drew praise from former Gilas Pilipinas coach and current Indonesia mentor Rajko Toroman for his performance through the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Toroman said after Gilas beat his Indonesian squad, 76-51, Friday, June 18 that the quality the 6-foot-4 Ramos has shown is at par with the way European guards play.

“I think the biggest surprise for me even back in Bahrain (second window) is Dwight Ramos,” Toroman said of the dashing Gilas cager.

“He’s looking like (a) European player. Good size, very tough, athletic, can shoot the ball and a big prospect for Gilas,” added Toroman.

Ramos is perhaps the most consistent player for Gilas in the Clark window, first posting 16 points, five rebounds and two steals in the 81-78 win over South Korea last Wednesday, June 16.

Against Indonesia, Ramos registered 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while adding three steals to keep Gilas unbeaten in Group A at 5-0.

Gilas coach Tab Baldwin explained that he is putting emphasis on Ramos being his chief playmaker, especially in tougher competitions where opponents will field bigger guards.

Overall, the 22-year-old has averages of 12.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.0 steals since Gilas’ campaign in the continental qualifiers began in Jakarta last Feb. 2020 with a 100-70 rout of Indonesia.

Ramos did make heads turn in the second window in Manama last November when Gilas produced twin defeats of Thailand.

The Fil-American cager had 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the first meeting that gave Gilas a 93-61 triumph before producing 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in a 93-69 win.
