5 dead in diarrhea outbreak in Davao de Oro barangay

DAVAO CITY – Five persons have died from a diarrhea outbreak caused by contaminated water since Thursday in Barangay Pasian, Monkayo, Davao de Oro.

Joseph Anthony Crizaldo, Municipal Information Officer, said Barangay Pasian was placed under a state of calamity on Thursday, June 17, after 184 cases of diarrhea were recorded.

As of noon Saturday, June 19, Crizaldo said the number of affected individuals has risen to 222, including the five deaths recorded.

Crizaldo said a total of 183 households have been affected. "The most number of cases were from Purok1-A, Purok 10, and Purok 6," he said.

He said the result of the water sampling and analysis on Friday, June 18, showed that the water source of the barangay has coliform contamination.

"The local government unit was surprised because the water source has been treated on Tuesday but still there was the presence of coliform contamination," he said.

The local government of Monkayo is conducting a massive treatment of the water source, Crizaldo added.

"There will be no water supply in Barangay Pasian for five days. Water provision is provided for the residents," he said. Currently, there are two water tanks in the area courtesy of the Philippine Red Cross.

Crizaldo also said that a two-day medical outreach was conducted in the barangay last Thursday and Friday. At present, most of the affected individuals have already been treated.

"As of last night, we have seven patients admitted in Andres Medical Clinic, we have no update yet if they were already discharged," Crizaldo said.
