Original image of Our Lady of Antipolo visits Manila Cathedral after 95 years

After 95 years, the original image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage of Antipolo again visited the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros on Friday, June 18.

The Manila Cathedral said the visit commemorates the 395th anniversary of the arrival of the image of the Virgin of Antipolo in the country, and also in time for the 500 Year of Christianity in the Philippines.

"The last visit of the original image of Antipolo at the Manila Cathedral was 95 years ago, during her canonical coronation in 1926," the Cathedral said in a Facebook post.

The historic visit was marked with a Eucharistic celebration and reenactment of the coronation to presided by Manila Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo together with Bishop Nolly Buco, Auxiliary Bishop of Antipolo.

"This reenactment is an important sign of our devotion to Our Lady of Antipolo," said Pabillo.

"I hope this simple ceremony of the reenactment should inspire us, should push us to really crown Mary in our hearts," he added.

After the image of Our Lady of Antipolo was canonically crowned in Luneta in 1926, it was brought in a procession to the Manila Cathedral for the novena.

The image of our Lady was enshrined at the main sanctuary of the Cathedral and for nine days, different groups, religious congregations, schools and communities took turns in celebrating Masses, pilgrimages, and prayers to honor the Virgin.

The novena culminated with Manila Archbishop Michael O’ Doherty imparting the Papal blessing on the crowd before the procession and motorcade starts going back to Antipolo.
