Infra spending by gov't tops P2.5 T in 5 years

The Duterte administration achieved more than triple the infrastructure accomplishment of its predecessor, from P820.4 billion between 2011-2015 to P2.536 trillion between 2016-2020, or a 209 percent increase.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar made the announcement in today's virtual press briefing, "Progress Update on Build Build Build."

So far, the projects have generated 6.5 million jobs and the government expects to generate 1.6 million more this year.

The DPWH constructed 26,494 kilometers of roads, 10,376 flood mitigation projects and 5,555 bridges.

"We built an unprecedented number of bridges," Villar noted. "The pandemic was not an excuse for us."

On the part of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Secretary Arthur Tugade cited the transformation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport ( NAIA) from one of the worst in the world to the top ten most improved.

The Duterte administration also saw the completion of the Mactan Cebu International Airport and the Panglao International Airport.

Soon, the DOTr will inaugurate the Siquijor Airport, Clark International Airport, Cotabato Airport, General Santos Airport, Zamboanga Airport, and Busuanga Airport.

The DOTr, together with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), completed a total of 212 airport projects, while 102 more are well underway.

In the railways sector, DOTr has been pushing for the expansion of the operational railway length of the country, from just 77 kilometers to 1,200 kilometers. So far, the agency has completed at least 400 kilometers.

Other railway projects, neglected for years, are now gaining ground, including the Metro Manila Subway, the North-South Commuter Railway Project, MRT-7, LRT-1 Cavite Extension, and the LRT-2 East Extension Project.

The MRT-3 Rehabilitation has been completed and the LRT-2 East Extension is ready for inauguration this month.

For the road transport sector, the DOTr continues to address traffic congestion via the EDSA Busway, promotion of active transport and the EDSA Greenways.

For the maritime sector, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), already completed 446 seaport projects since 2016, while working on the completion of 117 more.
