ICU occupancy at PGH now at 90%

The number of coronavirus patients at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has “plateaued” in the last two weeks, while the occupancy of its intensive care unit (ICU) beds is now almost at maximum capacity.

PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said Friday, June 18, that the hospital’s ICU utilization rate remains at 90 percent, despite the reported decline in the healthcare utilization rate of hospitals in Metro Manila.

“Sa PGH, ang napansin namin for the last two weeks hindi bumaba pero biglang nag-plateau, hindi siya tumuloy-tuloy na bumaba (At PGH, what we have noticed for the last two weeks, the number of patients did not drop but it suddenly plateaued, it did not continue to decrease),” he said in a TeleRadyo interview.

“Ngayon, naglalaro kami sa mga 125 to 130 (Right now, we are at around 125 to 130 patients),” he added.

He said that the PGH, which is a referral center for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Metro Manila, has allocated 250 beds for infected patients.

Del Rosario said they have observed an increase in the number of COVID-19 patients being admitted at the hospital’s charity wards compared to the number of patients admitted in its private wards.

“Hindi pa talaga totally wala 'yung COVID, meron pa rin, and there are pockets of spread so kailangan nating talagang mag-ingat (COVID is not totally gone, it is still there, and there are pockets of spread so we really need to be careful),” he said.

“We’re seeing the surge sa Bicol, some parts sa Visayas. It’s really a reminder that it can happen anytime,” he added.
