Does this Dior couture piece look similar to singer Björk's 2001 Oscars dress?

Dior resort 2022 finale look and Björk in Marjan Pejoski's swan dress

Celebrating Greece and its Olympics legacy is French fashion house Dior as it presented its epic runway show at the Panathenaic Stadium for its resort 2022 offering.

Over 90 looks walked down the historic marble stadium where the first international Olympic games was held. "This collection is born by couture, athleticism, and antiquity," says the house's matriarch Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Like modern warriors, models strutted on the stadium garbed in pieces that feature sportswear elements tamed down by Dior's signature touches. Its color palette played with shades of white, cream, black, and blue, just like the age-old artifacts found in the land. But what struck many the most is the show's finale piece, a white couture dress with layers of tulle skirt and an elegant swan on the top.

If you've mastered your fashion pop culture history to the T, then you'll definitely know where you've seen this kind of look before. Back in the 2001 Oscars, singer Björk wore an almost the same look from Macedonian designer Marjan Pejoski. She even brought ostrich eggs to the red carpet to create a bigger statement, earning the singer and the designer much praise and, of course, criticism among fashion police.

Both the Pejoski and Chiuri's dress have similar traits, from its colors to the swan's neck creates that halter neckline. But what's ironic is that this wasn't the first time the swan dress was "recreated" on the fashion runway. According to CR Fashion Book, Italian fashion label Valentino released a piece just like it in its 2014 spring-summer presentation, which was inspired by the opera. The creatives behind it were Pierpaolo Piccioli and, well, Chiuri.

But before you give Chiuri some side eye, it is worth-knowing that the swan is a big part of Greek mythology's emblems. It symbolizes grace and beauty, and is the sacred bird of Aphrodite and Apollo. Zeus himself even transformed into one to seduces and rape Leda, the wife of King Tyndareus, which brings us to a much closer reference for the 2021 swan dress. A story by Vogue says that Chiuri paid homage to a 1935 photograph of actress Marlene Dietrich dressed up as Leda. Dietrich back then was known for wearing only Dior.
