Comelec notes over 100K downloads for mobile registration app

More than 100,000 individuals have so far downloaded the Mobile Registration Form App of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) just days after its launch.

"We are tracking the downloads. More than 100,000 downloads so far in the last three days," Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said in a television interview.

"Those are very good numbers. It is important to see that," he added.

But Jimenez said they do not automatically consider them as individuals that have already sought to be registered.

"When you download, it doesn't mean you go out and register on the same day. A lot of people register after some time. We will see that impact downstream," he said.

On Thursday, the poll body said, their Mobile Registration Form App will no longer be downloadable online starting June 17.

The Comelec said this is in order to prioritize its use in pilot areas which consist of 575 cities and municipalities in the country.

"It will be available only through pilot areas of local Comelec offices and may be shared by Android users via SHAREit or Bluetooth," it said.

The Comelec added that the app remains to be usable offline.

"Once shared, the user may apply for voter registration by typing in the necessary information required by the app," it said.

"An encrypted QR Code will be generated once the user finishes providing all the required details. Afterwards, the user may visit the local Comelec office to have their QR Code scanned and biometrics taken," added the poll body.

The app was launched in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte on June 15.
