Romualdez on Duterte endorsement for VP: 'I am keeping my options open'

House Majority Leader and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez on Thursday, June 17, thanked President Duterte for assuring his support should the former run for vice president in the 2022 elections.

“I thank President Rodrigo Duterte for his trust and confidence in me to hold the second-highest position of the land. I am deeply honored that he considers me, a congressman from the Eastern Visayas worthy to serve as the country’s next Vice President. For this, I will be eternally grateful to the President,” Romualdez said in a statement.

“Currently, I am keeping my options open with regard to the 2022 elections. For sure, the President’s warm support and words of encouragement will weigh heavily on whatever decision I have to make in October 2021," he disclosed, adding that he will consult Duterte in making his decision.

Duterte bared on Wednesday, June 16, that has committed his support for Romualdez since the feud between House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and Taguig-Pateros Representative Alan Peter Cayetano last year.

Romualdez is president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) political party. Duterte, on the other hand, chairs the Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), whose members are urging him to run for vice president in the upcoming polls.

Duterte said he will not join the vice presidential race should Romualdez run for the post.

"I will support him because I promised him," the President said.

In the meantime, Romualdez said he is "focused on steering the approval of vital legislative measures that the President wishes to be passed before his term ends next year."

"Marami pa po kaming kailangang gawin sa House of Representatives. Marami pa kaming batas na dapat ipasa para mapabuti ang kalagayan ng mga kababayan nating Pilipino sa panahon ng pandemya (There are still a lot of things to do in the House of Representatives. We have several proposed laws that we have to pass to respond to the pandemic)," he added.
