Robredo bids British envoy goodbye, thanks UK for help in securing COVID-19 vaccines

Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday, June 17, bade farewell to British Ambassador to the Philippines Daniel Pruce as his four-year assignment in the Philippines is nearing end in August.

The vice president also thanked the envoy for the appreciation that the British government showed Filipino nurses there during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also took the chance to express her gratitude for the assistance Pruce and the embassy has given in the country’s procurement of the coronavirus vaccines, which are manufactured by United Kingdom’s drugmaker AstraZeneca.

“This year, we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the Philippines and the United Kingdom. We thanked the good Ambassador for the tribute Prime Minister Boris Johnson made to our Filipino health workers in the UK and the important role they continue to play in their Covid response operations,” she said in a Facebook post

“We likewise expressed our gratitude for the heartfelt message Prince Charles gave the Filipino people during our last Independence Day celebration. They are testaments to the high regard accorded to Filipinos in the UK and the close ties that our countries and our peoples enjoy,” Robredo added.

Both Johnson and the heir to the British throne paid tributes to Filipino health workers in helping the UK in its fight against COVID-19.

“The bonds of friendship between us are stronger than ever. At a time when we have faced the unprecedented challenges of the coronavirus, those links have provided the foundation for us to work together towards a better future,” the Prince had said in a video message posted by Pruce in time for the celebration of Philippine independence on Saturday, June 12.

Laure Beaufils will replace Pruce in August, the British government announced in April.

Beaufils is currently deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa of the UK Department for International Development.

The ambassador said she was “delighted” with her new assignment.

“It will be an honor to build on the work of @DanielPruce and his talented team to further strengthen our important ties and friendships,” Beaufils tweeted.
