Poe a 'good' VP candidate if she won't run for president in 2022 — 1Sambayan

Senator Grace Poe will make a “good” vice president in the May 2022 polls if she doesn’t want to consider running as president, opposition coalition 1Sambayan said.

“The names that were floated were both for president and vice president. And among the organizations in 1Sambayan, there are some groups who really still feel that she would make a good vice president, if not president,” Bro. Armin Luistro, 1Sambayan convenor, recently told ANC’s After the Fact.

He was aware that the senator has no plans to run for president, but the coalition made the list based on who they think should run for the country’s two highest positions.

1Sambayan released the list of names for president and vice president on Saturday, June 12, but four out of the six nominees already declined the nomination.

Only Vice President Leni Robredo and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV did not reject the nomination by 1Sambayan. Aside from Poe, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, House deputy speaker and evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva, and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto all said they do not have plans to run for president.

But Luistro said the list is “not final” yet.

“This is not the final list anyway. There will come a time when we could finalize the list,” he added without saying when 1Sambayan plans to come out with the final list of its nominees for the May 2022 polls.

The former education secretary is confident that the other nominees will not join other political parties even if they don’t seek higher positions.

“This is very clear to us and to them. If the opposition is divided, then it will be the incumbent that would win. And I think that is clear in all the conversations,” Luistro said.

1Sambayan was formed by its convenors—retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario—to come up with a united opposition to go against the administration’s bets next year.
