Advincula to finally receive 'red hat' on June 18

After being postponed twice, the "red hat" ceremony for Cardinal Jose F. Advincula will finally take place Friday, June 18.

Father Emilio Arbatin, spokesperson of the Capiz archdiocese, said the ceremony will push through as scheduled.

The bestowal ceremony will be held at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral in Roxas City, Capiz at 3:30 p.m.

Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown, who will lead the ceremony, will bestow the red hat and ring, which are the symbols of his membership in the College of Cardinals, upon the outgoing Capiz archbishop.

With the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Archdiocese of Capiz urged the faithful to join the celebration virtually.

"We all want to witness this historic and once in a lifetime event. However, in observance of health protocols, and to ensure the safety of everyone, we enjoin the lay faithful to follow the entire celebration through Facebook live streaming," it said in a Facebook post.

It was in October last year when Pope Francis announced the 13 new additions to the College of Cardinals.

But with the consistory on Nov. 28 occurring during the pandemic, Advincula and another cardinal from Asia didn’t make it to Rome because of travel restrictions.

He joined the celebration at the St. Peter’s Basilica online.

Advincula is the country’s ninth cardinal, following cardinals Orlando Quevedo, Luis Antonio Tagle, Gaudencio Rosales, Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales and Rufino Santos.

On March 25, the Pope appointed him as Manila archbishop, succeeding Tagle, who now heads the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Advincula is set to be installed as the new Archbishop of Manila on June 24 at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.
