James Yap ready in 2 weeks

Two-time PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) James Yap of Rain or Shine said that he is ready to join team scrimmage in two weeks as he continues to recover after a recent arthroscopic procedure on his left knee.

Yap had his knee procedure about three months ago, and he said he is recovering well and has done individual workouts when the team started practice session a few weeks back in Batangas.

“Even before naman mag-start nagwo-workout na ako mag-isa, pero noong nag-start na ensayo ng team kasama na ako pero puro individual lang like shooting,” said Yap when contacted Wednesday, June 16 by Manila Bulletin.

“Hopefully in two weeks maka-join na ako sa ensayo talaga ng team. Excited na maka-balik paglalaro, excited na sa new season kaya sana makapag-start na din ang PBA soon.”

Yap played 10 games last season during the ‘bubble’ Philippine Cup, averaging 7.10 points and 2.10 rebounds for the Elasto Painters

The league MVP in 2006 and 2010 is on the final season of his three-year deal with the Welbest-owned franchise led by best friends and business partners Raymund Yu and Terry Que.

Rain or Shine physical therapist JD Calinawan said that Yap’s condition would be assessed this weekend.

“This Saturday we'll do an assessment based on his functional capability on the court,” said Calinawan. “If comfortable s’ya sa galaw niya when running, jumping, reactions, and others.”

“If cleared, he may join practice sessions in two weeks from now, coaches can gradually include him on the 5-on-5.”

By his own assessment based on the individual workouts of Yap, Calinawan said the signs look good.

“The strength is there,” said Calinawan. “Mostly slight pain na lang naman, but the timing, if he’s comfortable with his moves, yung na lang naman ang mga kailangan pa na i-fine tune.”
