DPWH says Binondo-Intramuros Bridge now 68 percent complete

The construction of the China government-funded Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in the city of Manila has reached a completion rate of 68 percent as of Wednesday, June 16.

Thus, bared the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as it continues to work toward opening the bridge within the fourth quarter of this year. As its name implies, the bridge links the "Walled City" of Intramuros to the Binondo business district, which has an old Chinese community.

The aim of opening the bridge this coming fourth quarter is ahead of its original completion target of January 2022.

“The implementing office DPWH Unified Project Management Office - Roads Management Cluster 1 (UPMO-RMC 1) and contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation have made efforts to speed up work progress to ensure that the P3.39-billion project will be completed by this fourth quarter,” Villar said during a recent inspection.

The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project involves the construction of basket-handle tied steel arch bridge with a total length of 680 lineal meter. It will connect the historic district of Intramuros on Solana Street and Riverside Drive to the bustling district of Binondo on Rentas Street/Plaza del Conde Street and Muelle dela Industria.

The design of the arch bridge conforms to new seismic design specifications and climate change considerations, according to DPWH.

The design and construction of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge was funded by a grant from China.

Once completed, the bridge will accommodate around 30,000 vehicles per day and ease traffic congestion in the heart of Manila. It will also decongest the Jones, Delpan, and McArthur bridges.

Meanwhile, the other China-funded bridge, Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge, is now 93.02 percent complete. It will connect Estrella Street in Makati City to Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong City.
