Wesley So settles for third in Superbet Chess Classic

Grandmaster Wesley So drew with Romanian Constantin Lupulescu in the last round to finish third in the Superbet Chess Classic of the Grand Chess Tour Monday night.

So halved the point in 36 moves of an English Opening to finish the nine-round tournament with 5 points along with Armenia’s Levon Aronian and Russian Alexander Grischuk.

After tiebreaks were applied, So wound up at No. 3 behind second-placer Aronian, who drew with Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov in 14 moves of a Ruy Lopez duel.

Grischuk, who also split the point with Netherlands’ Anish Giri after 42 moves of a Guioco Piano, settled for fourth.

Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov captured the title with 6 points after escaping from a loss with a 25-move draw in a Four Knights encounter with France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Mamedyarov earned 13 tour points while pocketing $90,000 cash prize in the opening leg of the Tour. So, for his part, gained 8.3 Tour points and $45,000 (around P2.1 million).

Radjabov and Giri came in fifth and sixth with identical 5.5 points, while rounding up the finishers were Romania’s Bogdan-Daniel Deac, United States’ Fabiano Caruana, Lupulescu, and Vachier-Lagrave.

So seeks a better finish when he flies to France for the Paris Rapid and Blitz, the second leg of the Tour that stakes a total pot of $150,000.
