The Philippines logged 5,389 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases on Tuesday, June 15.

With the new infections, the total number of people who contracted the viral disease since the pandemic hit the Philippines last year went up to 1,327,431, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The DOH noted that 58,063 cases or 4.4 percent of the cumulative tally are still active cases.

Of the active cases, 91.8 percent are mild, 3.8 percent have no symptoms, 1.8 percent have severe symptoms, 1.3 percent are in critical condition, and 1.30 percent are in moderate condition.

The DOH observed a slight increase in COVID-19 cases nationwide. COVID-19 cases in Visayas and Mindanao are still on the rise while cases in Metro Manila and nearby provinces are slowly declining.

The case bulletin also showed 118 additional deaths, which include 65 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries. The death count is now at 22,963, which represents 1.73 percent of the country's total cases.

The DOH noted a decrease in COVID-19 deaths for this month, said DOH Epidemiology Bureau officer-in-charge Dr. Alethea De Guzman.

In a media forum, De Guzman said that from June 1 to 14, a total of 720 deaths were reported or an average of 51 deaths daily. This is relatively lower than the at least 3,000 deaths recorded last May with an average of 97 deaths daily, she said.

"We have reported 720 deaths and we are halfway through the month, this is much less than the 3,000 that were reported last May, but we want to push it down even more," she said.

De Guzman said that it is imperative to increase the critical care capacities of the various hospitals across the country. She also encouraged the public to seek early consultation if they experience symptoms of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the recovery count increased by 6,667 to 1,246,405--which is 93.9 percent of the total case count.
