Trillanes backs 1Sambayan vs Duterte; ready to support Robredo

Though he is not the favorite to win opposition coalition 1Sambayan’s blessing as its lone candidate for president, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said he fully supports the group even it requires him not to run in any elective post in the 2022 polls.

In his Monday’s virtual interview with Politiko, Trillanes revealed he has not spoken to Vice President Leni Robredo since their nomination on Saturday, June 12, but he said that his position remains the same.

“The moment mag-decide si Vice President Leni na tatakbo, immediately ako po’y magstep aside para masigurado na iisa lang ang kandidato ng oposisyon (The moment that Vice President Leni Robredo decides to run, immediately I will step aside to make sure that the opposition has only one candidate),” Trillanes stressed.

1Sambayan was built on the premise of nominating a united candidate from the opposition to go against the administration’s standard-bearer.

Trillanes, a former Navy officer and member of the Magdalo Group, said that he’s willing to run as senator or not run at all for an elective post if Robredo does not choose him to be her running-mate.

He assured the vice president, though, that she has his full support, adding that he will focus on making sure Robredo wins if she decides to run.

“Kasi nagbigay na po kami ng word of honor iyong aming grupo na susuportahan namin kung sino ang mapili ng 1Sambayan sa pagkapresidente (Because we gave our word of honor to our group that we will support whoever 1Sambayan chooses to run as president). So, we are committed to that word,” Trillanes said.

Robredo and Trillanes were among those who did not decline the nomination by 1Sambayan for president. The list is also composed of Senator Grace Poe, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva, and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, but they are not interested to seek the country’s highest elective post.

Trillanes said he respects the position of his co-nominees.

“Mabigat po ito. Mapapalaban ka sa isang administrasyon na talagang (This is difficult. You are going to be fighting against an administration that is really) very oppressive, very vindictive kaya ano ‘to, kung baga makikipaggiyera ka sa mga taong ito (it’s like going into war with these people),” he explained.
