Mountain Province town police cited for swift aid to distressed pregnant woman

NATONIN, Mountain Province – Police here were cited for their selfless act of helping a pregnant woman living in an isolated sitio in this town get to the hospital on Independence Day, June 12.

A Facebook post from the Philippine National Police (PNP) said the Natonin police received a call in the middle of their flag-raising ceremony about a pregnant woman who needed help to be taken to the hospital.

A team composed of Police Staff Sgt. Darel Bacwadang immediately proceeded to Sitio Batnong in Barangay Banawal to fetch the woman. However, they had to leave their vehicle behind and walk for at least an hour to get to the area.

Police and residents carried the pregnant woman through a “fulig,” walking again for more or less an hour in the return trip to reach the vehicle that would take her to the hospital.

The Police Community Affairs and Development Group of the Police Regional Office-Cordillera said a fulig is the manner of lifting a sick person who needs to be brought to the hospital using a blanket and a bamboo pole or pipe, fashioned into a makeshift stretcher, and is mostly done in remote, mountainous areas.

She was successfully taken to the Anastacia Rafael Sagel Memorial Hospital in Barangay Poblacion here.

PNP chief Police Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar commended Bacwadang and his team for their selfless act of genuine public service.

“Ipinakita lamang po ni Police Staff Sgt. Bacwadang at mga kasama nito na ang pulis na tunay at tapat sa serbisyo ay hindi napapagod sa pagresponde sa nangangailangan ng tulong (Police Staff Sgt. Bacwadang and his team showed that policemen who are loyal to the service do not get tired of responding to the call for help),” Eleazar said.

“Sana ay tularan sila ng ibang pulis sa bilis rumesponde sa oras ng pangangailangan (Other policemen should emulate their ability to immediately respond to the call for help),” he added.
