Mayor Zamora pushes to retain GCQ after June 15

A day before announcing the new quarantine classification for Metro Manila, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said on Monday that he wants to retain the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) classification for the National Capital Region Plus (NCR-plus) area.

"My personal recommendation is to retain the GCQ because inspite of the GCQ status, we are seeing a relaxation of activities. For instance, now as everyone is aware, senior citizens who are fully vaccinated are now allowed to go out and also gyms, fitness studios, racket sports, skating rinks have been allowed to operate within a 30 percent venue capacity as long as they have safety seals. Historical sites and museums are also allowed now at 20 percent venue capacity. Of course, I'm referring to the NCR+ area," Zamora said in an interview with CNN Philippines.

"So, it's possible to retain GCQ and gradually allow activities and basically, that's what's happening now," he added.

Zamora was also elated with the sharp drop of active cases recorded in the city since the surge in COVID-19 cases reported in March in Metro Manila.

"In fact, our cases are now down to just 82 from a high of 1,296 last April 12. So there is a direct correlation with the vaccines and the number of cases. The more people we vaccinate, the lower the cases go," Zamora said.

Asked about the vaccine status of San Juan, the mayor said that the city still has enough supply of vaccines to inoculate its residents.

"We have thousands of vaccines left for first dose and second dose so we have never had a problem in terms of vaccine supply here in San Juan. We also have just received our fresh supply yesterday so we are just right on track in vaccinating our entire population," Zamora said.

He added that as of June 12, the city has already vaccinated 38,296 San Juaneños or 44.8 percent of its target population.
