171 barangays in Pasay City declared COVID-free

Pasay City, where a spike of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases started in March, has declared that only 30 of its 201 barangays have active cases.

In the latest tally of the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU) as of 3:20 p.m. on Monday, June 14, the city logged a total of only 46 active COVID-19 cases with 10 tagged as new cases.

Currently, the city government said that 171 barangays are COVID-19-free. This is far from the city's figures during the surge of infections in March, which according to Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano reached as high as 1,200.

First of the local cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 were detected in Pasay City on March 2. Weeks before that, a spike in COVID-19 cases was recorded in the city.

The city's downward trend in cases was first cited by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. who lauded the city's initiatives to combat and stop the spread COVID-19 in its area.

Abalos even advised other local government units (LGUs) to follow what the city did in combating the virus.

Rubiano cited the aggressive contact tracing efforts in the drop of COVID-19 cases.

In April, she said, cases have gone down from three digits to two digits.

Recently, the Pasay City government ranked first in the use COVID-19 vaccines, according to the data from the Department of Health (DOH).

Rubiano said the local government has achieved an 85 percent vaccine utilization rate.
