Feast of Saint Anthony de Padua

Manila Archdiocese Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick S. Pabillo will preside over a high mass at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 13, at the St. Anthony de Padua Shrine in Sampaloc, Manila, in solemn commemoration of the Feast of Saint Anthony (San Antonio) de Padua, a Doctor of the Church and the patron saint of the poor and of lost things.

The faithful are invited to join the holy mass online. About 80 persons will be allowed inside the church to observe physical distancing.

Born and raised by a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal on August 15, 1195, St. Anthony first joined the Augustinian Order before joining the Franciscan Order in 1221. He gave up his wealth to be a servant of God. Many miracles were reported during his lifetime including the apparition of the Infant Jesus. He died on June 13, 1231and was buried at the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, Italy.

The Portuguese Catholic priest was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on May 30, 1232. He was declared a Doctor of the Church on Jan. 16, 1946.

To this day, St. Anthony is often invoked for the recovery of lost things. His image is portrayed carrying the Infant Jesus in memory of the apparition.
