Best teams from MPBL, NBL, VisMin Cup to compete in 'champions league'

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, National Basketball League and Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup agreed to hold a tournament that will be contested by the champions of the country’s top regional leagues.

This was announced Saturday, June 12 by Chooks-to-Go head Ronald Mascarinas, whose company serves as the major backer of the three leagues, in a virtual press conference also attended by top officials from the MPBL, NBL and VisMin Super Cup.

Mascarinas said the plan is for the tournament similar to the Philippine Collegiate Champions League to start once quarantine restrictions are eased.

“We will keep our ears close to the ground to figure out what our fans want and will

continue to innovate for them. After all, we are doing this primarily for the fans,” Mascarinas said.

MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes, NBL officials Rhose Montreal and Edward Aquino, VisMin Super Cup chief operations officer Rocky Chan and its newly-appointed consultant Chino Trinidad welcomed the new competition.

Trinidad is making a return to local basketball, 11 years after ending his tenure as commissioner of the defunct Philippine Basketball League.

It was also the first time that top brasses of the three leagues were able to come together, albeit virtually, amid so-called differences.

“We might have some differences but we share in one mission which is to give the Filipino athlete a place they can call home and give our countrymen something to dream about,” said Mascarinas.

But for now, the three leagues are focusing on how they can start their respective competitions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Duremdes said the MPBL is eyeing a September start for its Mumbaki Cup, the NBL plans to begin its season at the same time as the Women’s National Basketball League on July 3 while the Mindanao leg of the VisMin Super Cup will begin June 22 in Pagadian.
