Spotlight on medical frontliners, cops as PNP marks 123rd Independence Day

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it had a simple yet meaningful and solemn rites as it simultaneously commemorated the country's 123rd Independence Day at Camp Crame in Quezon City and in all police regional offices (PROs) nationwide on Saturday, June 12.

A flag-raising ceremony was held at Camp Crame led by PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar where he addressed the public by recognizing the gallantry and bravery of the past and modern-day heroes for their "tireless dedication to their professions" and for continuing to "risk their lives" amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As we celebrate this auspicious day of our independence, we do not only commemorate the valiant efforts of our heroes who fought for our freedom but we also pay respect, with the highest esteem, to our many modern-day heroes – our frontliners who selflessly serve the community during this pandemic, our police officers who lost their lives in the war against illegal drugs, and to all of us who have experienced various difficulties and surmounting challenges brought about by COVID-19," Eleazar said.

The PNP Chief encouraged all the cops to "continue delivering quality services for the benefit of the Filipino people."

"Because of the power and authority that is vested upon us, it is highly expected that we should not only be imbued with a patriotic and nationalistic spirit but also to remain unfaltering in upholding our sovereignty, protecting people’s rights and freedoms, and having deep respect and highest regard to the rule of law, just like our forebears and heroes. We need to make efforts to bring back their glorious past," he noted.

Underscoring the essence of unity and the need to exhibit extraordinary brand of resilience in this time of crisis, Eleazar also appealed to all PNP personnel and officers to remain steadfast in maintaining peace and order in the country.

Meanwhile, Eleazar exalted the essence of the Philippine flag -- which was unfurled as Philippine independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite -- as the PNP continues to battle illegal drugs, terrorism, and COVID-19 among others.

"Let it stand as an unyielding instrument of unity that binds the Filipino people," he said.

The Independence Day celebration also showcased astounding performances by members of the Philippine National Police Chorale and PNP Combo who rendered patriotic songs during the program.

The ceremonies culminated with the releasing of white doves by Eleazar and other key officers of the PNP as a symbol of peace, hope, and freedom.
