Poe won't run for president in 2022

Senator Grace Poe declined on Saturday, June 12, the nomination of the 1Sambayan opposition coalition as a potential presidential candidate for the 2022 elections, saying she will not run for president.

In a statement, Poe thanked the 1Sambayan for including her in their considerations for the two highest positions in the country for next year's polls.

"Nagpapasalamat tayo sa patuloy na pagtitiwala ng ating mga kababayan. Ngunit wala akong planong tumakbo sa pagka-Pangulo sa darating na eleksyon (We thank our countrymen for their trust. But I have no plans to run for presidency in the upcoming elections)," she said.

Poe, who was just reelected as senator in 2019, has been one of the initial choices for the opposition ticket since the 1Sambayan was launched in March.

On Saturday, the group announced its possible candidates for presidency and vice presidency.

Aside from Poe, the 1Sambayan also listed Vice President Leni Robredo, Batangas Representative

Vilma Santos-Recto, CIBAC Party-list Rep. Eddie Villanueva, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.

In declining the 1Sambayan's nomination, Poe said she would focus on helping in addressing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Sa abot ng aking makakaya bilang senador, nais kong pagtuunan ng atensyon ang pag-ahon ng ating mga kababayan mula sa pandemyang ito (In my capacity as a senator, I want to focus my attention on the recovery of our country from this pandemic)," Poe said.
