Masbate town vice mayor nabbed over 2019 slay of predecessor

Police have arrested the incumbent vice mayor of Batuan town in Masbate City over the killing of his predecessor in 2019.

A police report from the Bicol Police Regional Office (PRO-5) said Batuan Vice Mayor Nelson Cambaya, 58, was arrested in Barangay Quinapagian in Mercedes, Camarines Norte around 5 p.m. Thursday, June 10. He was served multiple warrants of arrest.

Cambaya was accused of being one of the seven suspects behind the killing of former Batuan Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III while he was having breakfast at an eatery in Sampaloc, Manila on October 9, 2019. Yuson's companions, Wilfredo Pineda and Alberto Alforte were injured in the shooting incident.

Bicol police said they were able to trace Cambaya thanks to information given by barangay officials.

Police then swooped in on the house where Cambaya was staying and served the arrest warrants for murder and frustrated murder issued against him by the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 42.

Cambaya was brought to the Mercedes police station where he is currently being held. A P200,000 bail was set for his frustrated murder charge while no bail was recommended for his murder case.

Aside from Cambaya, six others were also linked to Yuson's death namely Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board member Sandra Cam, and her son Marco Martin Cam; Junel Gomez; Bradford Solis; Juanito de Luna; and Rigor dela Cruz.

Yuson's family has accused the elder Cam, their political rival, of being the mastermind behind the killing.

Cam, who had denied her involvement in Yuson's slay, already surrendered to authorities last April after the court issued arrest warrants against her.
