Look up! Coast Guard issues safety reminders as rainy season begins

As the rainy season officially started in the country, dangers posed by rain showers and thunderstorms can be avoided if proper precautions will be followed especially for those going and sailing at sea.

To prevent unforeseen maritime incidents for sailors and fishermen, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has shared 11 important reminders as a safety precaution during the rainy season:

• Find out the weather before going to sea.

• Listen to the radio and watch television weather reports.

• Do not sail or fish during storms or bad weather.

• Assist in disseminating reminders to other fellow fishermen on the voyage during the storm.

• Make sure the boat's engine and equipment are in good condition before sailing and bring repair equipment.

• Inform your barangay captain, or local official before going to sail or fish and leave a contact number.

• List down the numbers of the Coast Guard personnel, police, soldiers, and other authorities of your barangay in case of emergency.

• Bring a sufficient number of lifejackets, flashlights, batteries, fully charged phone, radio, and whistle before going to sail.

• Make it a habit to have a companion or do not stay too far away from other boat companions.

• Do not sail on areas without a signal and let authorities know where you are going to sail.

• Always check the weather, keep your own safety in mind and don’t risk to sail during bad weather.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the onset of the rainy season in the country on Friday, June 4.

On Friday, June 11, the PAGASA said the “monsoon trough” will continue to affect the entire country.

The state weather bureau said that the trough is the line of convergence between the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).
