Roberto Gomez falters in last 16 of World Pool Championship

Roberto Gomez’s run in the World Pool Championship came to an end Wednesday, June 9, after dropping an 11-7 decision to American Skyler Woodward in the round-of-16 at Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, England.

Gomez squandered an early lead as Woodward orchestrated a comeback almost similar to his win over defending champion Fedor Gorst in the round-of-64 the other day.

The 42-year-old cue artist nicknamed “The Superman” had a 5-2 lead through seven racks but Woodward responded by taking nine of the next 11 racks to claim the victory.

Gomez leaves the English town with $4,000 (P191,000) for reaching the last 16 of the annual world 9-ball competition.

He came into the match having won all of his previous four and the only Filipino left in the competition following the early exit of Jeff de Luna in the group stage.

The Zamboanga City native became one of the early entrants into the knockout stage with wins over England’s Stewart Colclough (9-8) and Austria’s Albin Ouschan (9-7).

Gomez extended his run Tuesday by defeating South Africa's Muhummed Daydat (11-2) and Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp (11-7).
