Pope appoints Tagle as member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches
Pope Francis on Wednesday, June 9, appointed Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches.

CBCP News said the cardinal was the sole addition to the Congregation which also assists the Latin-rite Catholic dioceses of the Middle East.
Tagle will work alongside Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, who has been its prefect since 2014, and its other members.
Formerly known as the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, it began as part of the Propaganda Fide, established by Pope Pius IX in 1862.
In 1917, Pope Benedict XV declared it independent and named it Congregation for Eastern Churches.
The congregation works with about 23 Eastern Catholic churches and communities, and to ensure that the universal Catholic Church treasures its diversity, including in liturgy, spirituality and even in canon law.
It was in July 2020 when the pontiff also appointed Tagle as member of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.
In December 2019, the former Manila archbishop was appointed as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
The pontiff later elevated Tagle as cardinal bishop, the highest rank within the College of Cardinals.
