On Independence Day, Trillanes reminds Filipinos to register to vote

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has reminded Filipinos to register to vote in the May 2022 polls, saying that their votes will free the country from a “rotten” system.

In a video message posted on his Facebook page, the former senator greeted the public on the commemoration of the 123rd Independence Day on Saturday, June 12.

“Sa araw na ito, huwag ninyong kalimutan ilagay sa schedule ninyo ang pagparehistro para makaboto. Ito ang magiging daan para makalaya tayo sa mga bulok na pamamalakad at sistema para tuloy-tuloy na ang ating pag-unlad (On this day, don’t forget to put in your schedule your plan to register to vote. This is the way for us to be free from the rotten policy and system so our progress will continue),” he said.

Trillanes, a staunch critic of the Duterte administration, added he is one with the Filipino people in celebrating the country’s independence from Spanish colonial rule.

“Sana magsilbi ang araw na ito bilang paalala sa lahat ng sakripisyo at malasakit na pinakita ng ating mga bayani (May this day serve as a reminder to all the sacrifices and compassion that our heroes have shown),” he said.

“Huwag natin sayangin ang pinaghirapan nila. Patuloy nating ipaglaban ang ating bayan (Let us not waste what they have fought for. Let us continue fighting for our country),” he added.

Trillanes is expected to be one of the nominees for president of opposition coalition 1Sambayan, which will release the final list on Saturday in time for the celebration of the country’s Independence Day.

The former senator has been vocal about wanting to run as president and holding President Duterte accountable for the scores of extrajudicial killings that happened during his term.

His Magdalo Party has already led the filing of a case before the International Criminal Court (ICC), Trillanes earlier said.

However, he also said that he will not run as president if Vice President Leni Robredo decides to see the highest post in the country.

1Sambayan hopes to come up with a slate for a united opposition to go against the administration’s bets next year.
