Expect rain showers, thunderstorms across PH; LPA forms off Northern Luzon

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect the entire country in the next 24 hours due to the prevalence of a “monsoon trough,” the state weather bureau said Thursday, June 10.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) explained that the monsoon trough is the line of convergence between the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

The trough creates cyclonic vortices that leads to the formation of tropical cyclones, it added.

In the next 24 hours, Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the prevailing monsoon trough.

The agency warned that flash floods or landslides may occur due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Meanwhile, a low pressure area (LPA) was spotted near the Philippine area of responsibility.

Weather specialist Benison Estereja said the weather disturbance was located at about 655 kilometers west of Northern Luzon as of 3 a.m. Thursday.

“Base sa ating analysis, mababa ang tsansa na ito ay maging isang bagyo sa ngayon (Based on our analysis, there is a low chance that it will become a tropical cyclone),” Estereja said.

“Mababa rin ang tsansa na ito ay tatama sa ating kalupaan (There is also a low chance that it make landfall),” he added.
