TS 'Dante' update: PAGASA sees 'increasing likelihood' of landfall over E. Visayas or Bicol region
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday evening, May 31, raised tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 over more areas as tropical storm "Dante" (international name "Choi-wan") moved closer to the country.
In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA hoisted Signal No. 1 over the eastern portion of Sorsogon, eastern portion of Albay, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, eastern portion of Leyte, eastern portion of Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, and Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands.
These areas will experience strong winds during the passage of the tropical storm within the next 36 hours.

Within the next 24 hours, tropical storm Dante will also bring moderate to heavy rains over Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may also affect Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Cebu, Bohol, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and the rest of Caraga and Davao regions.
"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are highly likely, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.
"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.
Based on the projected track and wind radii of the tropical storm, PAGASA said there is an increasing likelihood that Signal No. 2 will be hoisted over several municipalities in the eastern portion of Eastern Visayas in the next bulletin at 5 a.m.
Moreover, PAGASA said Dante will continue to move generally northwestward until Wednesday, June 2.
It will likely pass close to the eastern coast of Bicol region and Eastern Visayas between Tuesday evening, June 1, and Wednesday evening.
"However, given the westward shift in the forecast track, there is an increasing likelihood that Dante may make landfall over Eastern Visayas or Bicol region," PAGASA said.
The center of Dante was estimated at 375 km east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte at around 10 p.m., Monday.
It has maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness up to 90 kph while moving northwestward at 20 kph.
"This tropical storm is expected to gradually intensify over the next 48 hours and reach severe tropical storm category by Wednesday afternoon or evening," PAGASA said.
Afterward, Dante is forecast to gradually weaken into a tropical storm by Thursday, June 3, and a tropical depression by Friday, June 4.
