TS 'Dante' to make landfall in Eastern Visayas, Bicol; Signal No. 2 up in 3 areas

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said tropical storm "Dante" (international name "Choi-wan") could make landfall over Eastern Visayas between Tuesday evening, June 1, and Wednesday morning, June 2.

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 was raised over Eastern Samar, Samar, and Northern Samar in the PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin issued on Tuesday.

Signal No. 1 was also hoisted over Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and southeastern portion of Quezon, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, northern portion of Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, northern portion of Surigao del Sur, northern portion of Agusan del Sur, northern portion of Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.

Dante is expected to bring strong winds to gale-force winds in areas under Signal No. 2, while strong winds may affect areas under Signal No. 1.

In the next few hours, PAGASA said moderate to heavy rains will prevail over Eastern Visayas, northern Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Sorsogon, and Masbate.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains will also affect Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Sur, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, the rest of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.

"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are highly likely, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.

Forecast track and intensity

As of 4 a.m., Tuesday, the center of tropical storm Dante was estimated at 310 kilometers (km) east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte or 380 km east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 75 km per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph while moving northwestward at 20 kph.

In its current forecast track, PAGASA said tropical storm Dante will likely have its initial landfall over Eastern Samar between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

It may also pass in the vicinity of Camarines Sur-Catanduanes area by Wednesday afternoon.

Afterward, Dante will likely turn generally northward over the Philippine Sea east of Northern Luzon by Thursday, June 3, and northeastward by Friday, June 4.

PAGASA said Dante may intensify into a severe tropical storm by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

However, it pointed out that given the increased likelihood of landfall in the next 24 hours, such an intensification scenario may be slightly deterred.
