Manila priests hold penitential walk

Priests from the Archdiocese of Manila held a penitential walk Tuesday, June 1, from the Quiapo Church in Quiapo to the Sta. Cruz Parish in Manila.

Manila Archdiocese Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo, in a pastoral instruction said, the penitential walk is aimed at praying for the needs of the country, the world, and for an end to the coronavirus pandemic. The penitential walk coincides with the Day of Prayer and Fasting in the archdiocese.

All the priests in the archdiocese are enjoined to participate in the religious event “to implore God’s mercy,” on the first day of June, the month of the Sacred Heart.

Quiapo Church parochial vicar Fr. Douglas Badong said, the faithful are not allowed to join the walk. “They will be represented by their priests who will come from different parishes. The faithful may join the religious event online,” he said as he clarified that the walk is “not political in nature.”

The walk will be preceded by a communal penitential service at the Quiapo Church during which the priests may confess their sins to one another. In the afternoon, a holy mass will be celebrated in all the parishes for the forgiveness of sins and the healing of our land.
