'Fast & Furious 9' earns $15.6-M to lead top-grossing films in Korea in May

“F9,” or the “Fast & Furious 9,” the latest franchise starring Vin Diesel, became the No. 1 film in South Korea in May.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “F9” grossed $15.57 million and sold 1.79 million tickets for the month since its world premiere in South Korea on May 19. Its revenue share for the month is 42 percent among all films.

Its total tickets sold put “F9” as the third top-grossing film in Korea this year as of May after “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie - Mugen Train” with 2.07 tickets sold and “Soul” with 2.04 million in total admissions. The Oscar-nominated “Minari” placed fourth with 1.12 million tickets sold followed by “Godzilla vs. Kong” with 703,235.

In the top 10 films in South Korea in May, “F9” is followed by “Cruella” with 330,110 tickets sold and gross of $2.74 million; “Waiting for Rain,” 314,749 tickets sold and $2.65 million in revenue; “The Courier,” 245,412 / $2.1 million; and “The Croods: A New Age,” 221,926 / $1.76 million.

The Korean film industry posted the highest cinema attendance and box office gross this year in May with 4.37 million tickets sold and $37 million in revenue, compared to 2.56 million tickets sold and gross of $21.23 million in April.

6. “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie - Mugen Train” (Japan) - 209,972 / $1,844,519

7. “Minari” (US) - 143,850 / $1,171,695

8. “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” (Hungary) - 128,928 / $1,153,715

9. “Recalled” (South Korea) - 125,713 / $1,111,611

10. “Pipeline” (South Korea) - 96,230 / $757,320
