'Dante' slightly weakens, nears Eastern Samar

Tropical storm "Dante" (international name "Choi-wan") has slightly weakened ahead of its landfall over Eastern Samar between Tuesday evening, June 1, and early Wednesday morning, June 2.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Dante has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It is moving north-northwestward slightly faster at 25 kph.

As of 4 p.m., the center of tropical storm Dante was estimated at 85 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar or 110 km east-southeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar

Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, southern portion of Camarines Norte, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Island, Albay, Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, and northeastern portion of Leyte.

Signal No. 1 was also up in Rizal, Laguna, southeastern portion of Batangas, Quezon including Polillo Islands, the rest of Camarines Norte, Marinduque, Romblon, northeastern portion of Aklan, northeastern portion of Capiz, northeastern portion of Iloilo, northeastern portion of Negros Occidental, northern portion of Cebu, northeastern portion of Bohol, the rest of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands, Dinagat Island, northern portion of Agusan del Norte, northern portion of Agusan del Sur, and northern portion of Surigao del Sur.

Strong winds, heavy to intense rainfall

In the next 24 to 36 hours, Dante is expected to bring strong winds to gale-force winds in areas under Signal No. 2, while strong winds may affect areas under Signal No. 1.

Moreover, in the next few hours, PAGASA said the storm will bring moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Masbate, Romblon, and Eastern Samar.

Dante will also bring moderate to heavy rains over Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Camiguin, Samar, Bohol, northern portion of Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Capiz, Iloilo, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, and southern portion of Quezon.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may also affect Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Sur, Bukidnon, Catanduanes, and the rest of Visayas.

"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered flooding including flash floods and rain-induced landslides are highly likely, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.

Forecast track and intensity

In its current forecast track, PAGASA said tropical storm Dante will likely make its initial landfall over Eastern Samar between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning.

Dante may remain as a tropical storm before landfall then weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday, June 3, and a low pressure area by Saturday, June 5.

PAGASA said Dante will likely be in the vicinity of San Roque, Northern Samar around 2 a.m., Wednesday, and in the vicinity of Goa, Camarines Sur around 2 p.m., Wednesday.

Around 2 a.m., Thursday, Dante will be at 90 km east-southeast of Baler, Aurora, and around 2 p.m., Thursday, in the vicinity of Maconacon, Isabela.
