AFP recommends only one admiral to Duterte as next PH Navy chief--Sobejana

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has submitted to President Duterte its recommendation for the next Philippine Navy (PN) Flag Officer in Command with the impending retirement of Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo on Wednesday, June 9.

AFP Chief Gen. Cirilito Sobejana confirmed that the Bureau of Generals (BOG) sent the list last Saturday, May 29, and that it contained the name of only one admiral.

"We already have but I don't have the liberty to tell you until such time that the President has picked," Sobejana told reporters.

Asked how many names were included on the BOG's list, the AFP chief responded: "Isa lang (Only one)."

Sobejana also described the selection process as "very deliberate."

He described the lone recommendation as "competent" and a "senior" in terms of military ranking.

"He is very much capable to assume the responsibility as the Flag Officer in Command," Sobejana noted.

Bacordo, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Hinirang" Class of 1987, is the 38th and incumbent PN Flag Officer in Command. He will turn 56 years old on June 9, the mandatory retirement age for military personnel.

At the helm of the PN, Bacordo is assisted by Rear Adm. Adeluis Bordado, the PN vice commander; Rear Adm. Nichols Driz, the Chief of Naval Staff; and Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) Froilan Garcia, the PN Command Master Chief.
