1-year-old girl dies in landslide in Davao de Oro

DAVAO CITY - A one-year-old girl was killed in a landslide in Davao de Oro province due to sustained torrential rains brought by Tropical Storm "Dante" (Choi-Wan).

In a phone interview Tuesday, June 1, Joseph Randy Loy told The Manila Bulletin that a landslide incident occurred in two purok in Barangay Panoraon, Maco on Sunday (May 30), 5 pm. Loy identified the victim as Renivel Alhanzar Arnado Pay-ao.

"It was reported to us by the provincial community relations officer na nakaassign sa area," Loy said. He said two houses were totally damaged while three were partially damaged.

Loy added that they are still monitoring the levels of rivers in the province. "Since yesterday may mga pagtaas pa rin ng tubig sa rivers dito, dahil nga galing sa headwaters sa tributaries may increase sa water level (Since yesterday, there are increases in the water level of the rivers here)," he said.

As of 8 am today (June 1), Loy said 50 families from Compostela and Nabunturan have been pre-emptively evacuated.

He also said minor landslide incidents were recorded in Tagugpo, Pantukan town. Clearing operations are also ongoing after a landslide incident along Km 69 of the national highway in Barangay Tuboran, Mawab.

Based on the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 11 issued at 11 am today, the center of Tropical Storm “DANTE” "was estimated based on all available data at 235 km East of Maasin City, Southern Leyte."

PAGASA said light to moderate with at times heavy rains are also likely over areas in Central Visayas and Mindanao including Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Sur, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao Region, and SOCCSKSARGEN.
