ITCZ brings rain showers, thunderstorms in Palawan, Visayas, Mindanao

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) continued to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Palawan, Eastern Visayas, and Mindanao on Sunday, May 9, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA warned those in these areas to remain alert against possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains from the ITCZ.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will continue to be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to the prevalence of easterlies and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA advised the public to take extra precautions against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Based on its extended weather outlook for key areas from May 10 to May 13, PAGASA said that maximum air temperatures may reach 34-35 degrees Celsius in Metro Manila, 36-37 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao City, 27-28 degrees Celsius in Baguio City, 31-32 degrees Celsius in Tagaytay City, 33 degrees Celsius in Puerto Princesa City, 33 degrees Celsius in Metro Cebu, 33-34 degrees Celsius in Metro Davao, and 32-35 degrees Celsius in Zamboanga City.

The highest recorded air temperature in the Philippines was 42.2 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao, Cagayan on May 11, 1969.

Meanwhile, the highest recorded air temperature in Metro Manila was 38.5 degrees Celsius on May 14, 1987.

Air temperature is different from heat index.

The heat index is the measurement of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

It is at least 3 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius higher than the actual air temperature.
