PH records 6,979 new COVID-19 cases

The country recorded 6,979 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases on Saturday, May 8, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The new cases brought the number of active infections nationwide to 63,376. The DOH added that 94.1 percent were experiencing mild symptoms, two percent were asymptomatic, 1.2 percent were critical, 1.4 percent were in severe condition, and 1.04 percent have moderate symptoms.

A total of 1,094,849 confirmed cases have been recorded in the Philippines since the pandemic started last year.

The number of recoveries climbed to 1,013,204 after 10,179 more patients recovered. Meanwhile, 170 more patients died, bringing the death count to 18,269.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they observed a decline in the number of new cases in the past weeks. However, it can be attributed to the fewer swab samples that the laboratories are receiving.

“Atin pa rin pong inoobserbahan kung ito ay dala talaga ng pagkonti ng mga kaso o hindi lang po natin nate-test ang ating mga kababayan ng mas madami (We are still observing whether this is really due to the decrease in cases or we are not conducting enough testing),” she added.
