Nothing could be more challenging than having a child in a world threatened by the pandemic. But broadcast journalist Rizza Diaz is soldiering on and enjoying her new role as a first-time mom to baby girl Bella with partner Nick Demusis.

“It’s overwhelming, but very fulfilling. You can try preparing for it, but it’s nothing you will be ready for until you are there at that moment,” Diaz, 36, said. It was a challenge she was happy to take on, but the PBA courtside reporter and news anchor admitted to having this rollercoaster of emotions when she found out she was pregnant.

“I was confused. Happy but scared too… Nicky just left for work, ECQ (Enhanced Community Quarantine) was in full effect, and I am practically alone and I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “Being pregnant for the first time was pretty nerve-wrecking. And the fact that I am about to deliver a baby in a world that’s threatened by a virus and is on a lockdown is super frightening!”

Despite the uncertainties, Diaz and her partner welcomed it as a blessing, something to look forward to especially in these unprecedented times. Though she admitted to having a smooth pregnancy, Diaz said the experience was nothing close to normal. She had her first checkups with her obstetrician done virtually, and she went through ultrasounds alone.

Her movements were also limited. She couldn’t go for a walk outside, couldn’t buy groceries herself, and couldn’t accept visitors due to restrictions for pregnant women. She was isolated for most part of the pregnancy. There were also times she wasn’t allowed to go to work due to strict health protocols. It raised a bit of concern for her and her partner, but Diaz said they just moved forward and adjusted to the situation.

“The pandemic is really the villain to pregnant women but again, it’s for our own safety so as much as it’s truly sad… you just gotta be strong and suck it up—or it’d say, ‘Mama up!” said Diaz. It was tougher during the time of delivering the baby. With her partner abroad for work, she had to pack her bags alone, drive herself to the hospital and go through 10 hours of labor by herself.

But it was all worth it. Diaz said no words could describe how she felt upon holding her baby for the first time. Like they say, you’ll never know the depth of a mother’s love until you become one. “(It was) so hard to put into words. It’s like holding love in your hands. Ganun pala yun noh? Lahat ng hirap at sacrifice, gone! Totally gone! It was the happiest day of my life,” she said.

For now, Diaz happily navigates her new life with another life depending on her. She was thankful for the support group that she has -- from her family to friends -- but most especially to her partner, Nick, who has been solid throughout.

“He is my hidden super strength, my secret weapon. I can’t ask for a better partner,” ended Diaz.
