'Now they will stop bashing you': Sinas recalls 'cyberbullying' of his child during retirement speech

Gen. Debold Sinas took a moment in his retirement speech Friday, May 7, to look back at the difficult times he endured during his tenure as the 25th chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Sinas was replaced by Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, who officially took over the helm of the 220,000-strong PNP as its 26th chief in a change of command ceremony held at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

In his speech, Sinas recalled how one of his children suffered from cyberbullying and bashing when he became the country's "top cop".

"To my children Nico, who is now in heaven, and my beloved daughter Abby, thank you for your love, devotion and understanding of my job as a policeman. I know you suffered from bashing and cyberbullying but you persisted and stood your ground," he said.

"Thank you so much baby and now they will stop bashing you," he added.

Sinas did not specify the reason why one of his children was subjected to online bashing.

It was May 2020 when Sinas was heavily criticized for allegedly violating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) protocols during his so-called "mañanita" birthday party. Despite a prohibition on mass gathering, Sinas was thrown a surprise birthday party by dozens of his subordinates when he was still the commander of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

Duterte eventually cleared Sinas of any violation in connection with the event.

Sinas had also been called out in the past for his weight, which prompted him to enforce stricter weight loss programs for obese cops under his leadership.

Sinas expressed appreciation to his parents and the rest of his family as he bowed out of service.
