Vaccinating workforce against COVID-19 will ensure continued operation of HEIs - CHED

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) underscored the importance of vaccinating the skeleton workforce of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to ensure that their operations will continue.

“We must make sure that the operations of universities will continue by vaccinating their skeletal workforce,” CHED Chairman J. Prospero De Vera III said in a virtual press conference on Thursday, May 6.

De Vera said that it is very crucial for universities and colleges to have their workforce vaccinated against COVID-19, “otherwise, ang implication niyan medyo masama (the implication will be bad).”

With in-person classes among students and physical reporting of personnel still prohibited due to the threat of COVID-19, HEIs are operating through skeleton workforce. Given this, the delivery of some services are hampered - leading to delayed processing of students' documents and grades as well as release of transcript of records and diplomas - among others.

“Kapag hindi mo na-vaccinate iyong mga frontliners, skeletal workforce sa universities, babagal iyong pag-issue ng credentials sa mga estudyante (If we don't vaccinate the frontliners, skeletal workforce in universities, the release of credentials needed by the students will slow down),” De Vera said.

When the credentials and other requirements needed by students - especially those who are graduating or have recently graduated - are not released on time, De Vera said that this will also have an implication on their future endeavors.

“...Maraming estudyante ang hindi makakapag-Licensure tests, hindi makakakuha ng trabaho (...Many students will not be able to take Licensure tests or get employment),” De Vera added.

With education frontliners elevated in the government's COVID-19 vaccination priority list - from the B1 to the A4 category - De Vera said that HEIs should have their workforce inoculated against the disease.
