Quizon, Concio, three others share Asian Zonal chess lead

International Masters Daniel Quizon split the point with Indonesian Grandmaster Novendra Priasmoro for a share of the lead after five rounds in the Asian Zonal 3.3 Chess Championships Wednesday, May 5.

Quizon, 16, drew after 99 moves of their Sicilian duel, missing the chance for the solo lead after forging a five-way tie atop the leaderboard with Michael Concio Jr. and Indonesians IM Mohamad Ervan, FIDE Master Siddharth Jagadeesh and IM Sean Winshand Cuhendi with four points apiece.

Concio and Ervan halved the point in just 16 moves while Jagadeesh and Cuhendi trounced Filipino Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and Indonesian FM Pitra Andyka.

It was the second straight time Quizon failed to cash in on his winning chances after a standoff with Malaysian FM Lye Lik Zang the round before.

Half a point off the pace were an eight-man chase pack that included another local bet Merben Roque, who downed Malaysia’s Poh Yu Tian.

The top two in this nine-round tournament will earn spots to the 2021 World Cup slated in August.
