OCTA: Restrictions may be eased if NCR's COVID-19 cases dip to 2,000

The quarantine restrictions imposed in Metro Manila may be relaxed if the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases recorded in the region decline to about 2,000 cases, a member of the OCTA Research Team said Thursday, May 6.

While there has been a downtrend in the number of cases in the metropolis, OCTA Research fellow Prof. Guido David said that the healthcare utilization rate in the National Capital Region (NCR) remains high.

“Until we get the number of cases in the NCR down to about 2,000 cases per day on average, if we can get that, we would feel a lot better about easing restrictions because even if we have a spike it will not yet overwhelm the healthcare system,” David said in a CNN Philippines interview.

“We always recommend easing restrictions in a gradual manner. We support restoring the economy and accelerating the recovery process, we believe we should do so gradually,” he added.

Meanwhile, the OCTA fellow said the effects of the easing of restrictions in Metro Manila and nearby provinces have yet to be seen.

“We’ll probably know more about this by the end of this week, so we’ll probably know more by around Sunday or Monday if there will be any changes in the trend that we are seeing right now,” he added.

President Duterte has extended the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) classification imposed in Metro Manila and its surrounding provinces until May 14.

The OCTA Research Team has observed a downward trend in the average daily number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the metropolis.

“We are happy to report that we are recovering nicely in the NCR. Cases are going down. The reproduction number has decreased to 0.74 in NCR,” David said.

“But at this point, the case level still significant and hospitals are still basically have high occupancies so we cannot really afford another surge at this point in time,” he added.
