Hontiveros expects utmost professionalism from 'soon-to-be' PNP chief Eleazar

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday said she is optimistic that she would witness “utmost professionalism” from Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar who has been appointed as the new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.

Hontiveros conceded that Malacañang made a good choice with Eleazar, who led the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) prior to his appointment.

Eleazar’s leadership, the senator said, is much needed during this time of a coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“I would like to congratulate Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar on becoming the next Chief PNP.

His call of duty now extends to every Filipino, amid the security challenges brought on by the pandemic,” Hontiveros said.

“I have hopes that he will serve with utmost responsibility, integrity, and professionalism to keep our communities safe,” she stressed.

“With his track record of hard work, trustworthiness, and accountability, I know he is ready to serve, honor, and protect the Filipino people,” the lawmaker added.

Other senators who lauded Eleazar’s appointment include Senate President Vicente Sotto III, former PNP chiefs and Senators Panfilo Lacson and Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

“Gen. Guillermo Eleazar – Best choice ever as PNP Chief ! A noble man!” Sotto said on is Twitter account.

Dela Rosa had also vouched for the new PNP chief’s “professionalism” saying he is confident the PNP “is in good hands” with Eleazar at the helm.

“Gen. Eleazar has the leadership qualities that would further elevate the level of professionalism in the PNP,” Dela Rosa said.

Eleazar will replace outgoing PNP Chief Debold Sinas, who is set to retire on May 8.

Sinas gained notoriety after being reported holding a birthday party in violation of quarantine guidelines at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

The outgoing PNP chief also became infamous for his rants against protesters and activists, the unresolved killings and violence in Central Visayas, and for having issues with members of the media.
